Why your sermon takes longer than you expect
Most people speak at 130 to 160 words per minute in everyday conversation. But preaching is not conversation. A preacher speaks more slowly, with greater deliberateness, because the goal is understanding, not information transfer. Pauses for emphasis, repeated phrases for retention, and shifts in volume all reduce the effective pace. 130 words per minute is a reasonable starting point for a typical sermon delivered at a steady, clear tempo.
Audience response adds time that no word count can predict. Laughter, amens, moments of quiet reflection, and the natural rhythm of a congregation listening together all stretch the clock. A sermon that reads flat at 22 minutes might run 26 minutes when delivered to a responsive room. If your service schedule is tight, build that buffer into your planning rather than trying to speak faster.
Treat this calculator as a starting point, not a rule. The best way to know how long your sermon will run is to deliver it out loud in full at least once before Sunday. Timed rehearsals will reveal where you naturally slow down, where the material is thinner than you thought, and whether your ending lands where it should.
