There is a strange assumption in some pulpits that practical preaching is shallow preaching. It is the opposite. Vague preaching is the easy option. Telling a room exactly what obedience looks like this week takes courage, clarity, and far more study.
Why abstraction feels safe
Abstract preaching cannot be argued with, cannot be measured, and cannot embarrass the preacher. "Walk in victory" asks nothing of anyone. "Stop looking at your phone during dinner with your kids" asks something of everybody, including the man saying it.
If your people can nod along without flinching for thirty straight minutes, the sermon is probably not landing anywhere.
The application ladder
Move down this ladder until you hit something concrete:
- Doctrine: what is true about God here?
- Disposition: what should that produce in a heart?
- Decision: what choice does that force this week?
- Detail: what does that look like on a specific day, with specific people, at a specific cost?
Most sermons stop at rung two. Preach all four.
Know the room you are preaching to
You cannot apply a text to people you have not listened to. Practical preaching is a pastoral output, not a rhetorical technique. Talk to your congregation during the week and their real pressures will write your applications for you: money, marriage, exhaustion, kids, grief, work they hate.
- Keep a note of the questions people actually ask you.
- Name real situations without naming real people.
- Give one application for the mature believer and one for the person who is barely holding on.
Guardrails so practical never becomes shallow
Application without exegesis is just advice. Keep these fences up:
- Every application must be traceable to a line in the text.
- Never turn grace into a to-do list. Command flows from what God has already done.
- Avoid promising outcomes Scripture does not promise.
- If your sermon works with the Bible removed, it was never a sermon.
Practical preaching also depends on being remembered. Structure and story do that work. See How to Preach a Memorable Sermon and Sermon Illustration Ideas That Actually Land.
